enarji pronounced (n-r-gee) Was founded in 2006 by Sue Bary

Principal Health Coach Sue Bary wanted to create opportunities for people like herself who enjoy living a holistically enriched healthy lifestyle but are often considered not to be in the conventional size range. enarji is about giving people the opportunity to enjoy this holistically enriched lifestyle without the stigma of 'you must get thin', 'you must lose weight', 'you must go on a diet to lose weight' etc.

Studies in the US as indicated by Jon Robison that health professionals are often extremely prejudicial in their treatment of larger individuals. The "New Paradigm" approach also referred to as Health At Every Size, which is an alternative for compassionate, health-enhancing care. This approach encourages self-acceptance by honoring the natural diversity in body shape and size and by exposing societal prejudice and discrimination against larger individuals. It promotes the benefits of physical activity by encouraging social, pleasure-directed movement. Finally, it helps people to re-connect eating to internally-directed hunger, appetite and satiety cues, leading to a more normal, peaceful relationship with food.

Health At Every Size

Health At Every Size promotes that an appropriate "healthy weight" for an individual cannot be determined by the numbers on a scale or by an ideal height/weight chart or by using the Body Mass Index (BMI) or body fat percentages. Rather, Health At Every Size defines a "healthy weight" as the weight at which a person settles as they move towards a more fulfilling and meaningful lifestyle - a lifestyle that includes eating in an unrestrained manner guided by internal cues and participating in enjoyable, reasonable and sustainable levels of physical activity.

The basic conceptual framework of the Health At Every Size philosophy includes the belief in:

The natural diversity of body shape and size
The ineffectiveness and dangers of dieting
The importance of relaxed eating in response to internal body cues
The critical contribution of social, emotional and spiritual as well as physical factors to health and       happiness.

The major components of Health At Every Size are;

Self-Acceptance

Affirmation and reinforcement of human beauty and worth irrespective of differences in weight, physical size and shape.

Physical Activity

Support for increasing social, pleasure-based movement for enjoyment and enhanced quality of life.

Normalized Eating

Support for discarding externally imposed rules and regimens for eating and attaining a more peaceful relationship with food by relearning to eat in response to physiological hunger and fullness cues.

'Health At Every Size supports physical activity that is reasonable and
sustainable.
The traditional, structured, sports oriented approach to movement does
not work for many people and has likely frightened many more away from
being physically active.
The emphasis in Health At Every Size is on helping
people to find movement that is fun and that fits their circumstances'.

The Community

It had also come to Sue's attention that some people were exercising in the community and not really knowing what exercise they were doing, what muscle group they were utilizing or how to exercise correctly. All of these components can lead to drastic injuries.

Understanding how to exercise correctly can benefit all of us in our later years, reduce exercise related injuries, improve our posture, sustain bone density and enjoy a holistically enriched lifestyle.

After months of research & talking with people in the community, Sue removed the word exercise from enarji’s vocabulary and changed it to Enjoyable Body Movement. Which clearly means if you do not like the movement you are doing at your session, do not do it and we will work on activities that you do enjoy.
